Cycling : Armstrong ponders Astana takeover
Lance Armstrong says sponsors are keen to back him if he takes charge of the cash-stricken Astana cycling team. The seven-time Tour de France winner joined the Kazakh-backed outfit last September after ending his retirement. But Astana have hit financial problems, with staff currently unpaid, prompting Armstrong to consider a takeover.
Boxing : Katsidis still wants Hatton fight
Australian Michael Katsidis could still fight Ricky Hatton in Manchester later this year, according to Katsidis's manager-trainer Brendon Smith. Hatton, 30, was knocked out in two rounds by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning. However, Hatton has not announced his retirement and is rumoured to be keen on one more fight in his home city.
Horse Racing : Golden Sword takes shock Vase win
Aiden O'Brien-trained Golden Sword stunned the field to win the Chester Vase by two lengths from stablemate and 13-8 favourite Masterofthehorse. The 25-1 shot led for most of the race while Jonny Murtagh was content to sit at the back on Masterofthehorse. The favourite made its move two furlongs out and challenged Golden Sword, ridden by Colm O'Donoghue, but could not close the gap in time.
Baseball : Ramirez given 50-match suspension
Los Angeles Dodgers batter Manny Ramirez has been handed a 50-match suspension after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug. Ramirez, 37 next month, is one of the highest profile players caught since testing in baseball began in 1993. The suspension will cost Ramirez $7.7m (£5m) - roughly 31% of his $25m salary.
